History
Ecolog was founded in 2001 with the objective to create a preserved forest area in the Amazon. Ecolog’s founders were inspired by sustainable management tools to conserve the forest and fight against the growing devastation that had already destroyed 18% of the native vegetation. With 30 thousand hectares, Ecolog’s reserve is located in Rondonia, 240 kilometers away from Porto Velho, the state of Rondonia’s capital city. The area dedicated to timber extraction follows an FSC certified forest management plan.
Ecolog’s project started with the intention to recover an Atlantic Forest degraded area in Itu, São Paulo. In 1996, after this experience, Ecolog’s pioneers decided that conserving biomes that are still intact, such as the Amazon Forest, was more important than to recover areas. “We know how important it is to preserve the Amazon. I discovered that a biome cannot recover, but can be preserved,” affirmed Fabio de Albuquerque, Ecolog’s mentor.
The sustainable extraction of timber in the Ecolog area started in 2004. Today, Ecolog’s saw mill produces 8.000 m3 of wood each year. The company employs 70 staff and generates revenues for the Vista Alegre do Abunã community, where it is located. The area where Ecolog’s timber extraction occurs is one of the best preserved in the region. This shows how efficient is forest management for the conservation of the Amazon.
