Forest Certification and FSC

The forest certification process guarantees the origin of the sustainable wood factory. It allows the consumer to be certain that the company adopted good socio-environmental practices that are economically viable.

In Brazil, a few companies have the credentials to act as certifiers. Imaflora is one of them. Technicians from these institutions visit forest management areas of wood factories – such as Ecolog – to audit their accounting and installations. During their analysis, they also verify how the management plan is been applied. This inspection happens to avoid the timber industry to clear and cut the areas. The company that follows the management plan only cuts a few individuals in a specific area and lets the forest rest for 25 years. This way the vegetation can regenerate and the forest is preserved for future generations. The main objective of the certification is to assure the consumer that this process is rigorously applied and that the forest is preserved. Wood industries with the FSC seal become promoters of Amazon conservation.

Certification includes all forest products and has become a passport for trade in many countries, particularly for the European Common Market. The concept of passport is what originated the expression “green seal.”
